ROH Live: The Cellist/Dances At A Gathering
Following the critical success of her vivid, expressionist ballets about Jane Eyre and Queen Victoria for Northern Ballet, Cathy Marston’s new work for The Royal Ballet is inspired by the life of the cellist Jacqueline du Pré. The work is set to a specially commissioned score by Philip Feeney which features extracts from Elgar’s Cello Concerto. With designs by Hildegard Bechtler, this performance will star Lauren Cuthbertson, Calvin Richardson and Matthew Ball. Jerome Robbins’s elegant and elegiac, Dances At A Gathering, forms the second part of the programme. An exercise in pure dance for five couples, set to music by Chopin, the work is a masterpiece of subtlety and invention. Initially intended as a single pas de deux, it was first performed by New York City Ballet in 1969 and was an immediate success. Now held a modern classic, it returns to The Royal Ballet repertoire this season after more than ten years.
