Met Opera Live: Maria Stuarda (2020)

When Mary, Queen of Scots, was forced to abdicate her throne, she fled to England where she was kept imprisoned for more than 18 years before her cousin Queen Elizabeth I ordered her execution. Donizetti’s thrilling historical opera dramatises the relationship between the two queens, particularly in his rendering of their astonishingly intense – though entirely fictional – meeting. This revival of David McVicar’s acclaimed 2012 production stars soprano Diana Damrau as Mary, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton as Elizabeth and tenor Stephen Costello as the Earl of Leicester. Maurizio Benini conducts.
