Harbour Highlights: La Haine

“How you fall doesn’t matter. It’s how you land!” Welcome to Harbour Highlights, a series of cult and classic favourites, handpicked by the staff of Harbour Lights. This month, Finn takes us to Chanteloup-les-Vignes to revisit Mathieu Kassovitz’s iconic French thriller La Haine. Winner of the Best Director trophy at the Cannes Film Festival, La Haine proved to be a break-out hit and helped propel star Vincent Cassel to international recognition. Following three friends from a disadvantaged neighbourhood near Paris across a day and a night, the film was inspired by the deaths of protestors at the hands of the French police force and was praised for its uncompromising and raw look at the social and economic divisions across France in the 90s. A regular inclusion in discussions on the best of world cinema, La Haine remains as powerful and captivating nearly 30 years later.
